Punk Bedroom Decorating Tips

A punk-style bedroom can be the perfect place to express yourself.

Feeling a bit punk? Does your personal taste run away from frills, tasteful textiles and patterned wallpaper, and closer to ripped denim, vintage Ramones posters and vinyl wall decals? A punk bedroom can be the perfect retreat, a place to gather your energy and express yourself. With a few ideas, a few dollars and a bit of effort, you can create your own punk bedroom hideaway.

Punk Up Your Walls

Punk is about change, and for this reason, your punk bedroom should be a versatile space, neither too static nor too fussy. Don't worry about hanging pictures perfectly, or straightening the curtains just so --- go for a slightly haphazard look instead and simply change it up if it doesn't feel right the first time. Try painting the walls dark colors, such as black, gray, blood red or dark purple --- it'll make the space feel smaller, more intimate and concentrated. Cover one wall with your favorite posters and photos, whatever inspires you to be your most authentic self. For a more changeable look, thread thin silver wire through eyelet screws along a wall, and clip the photos and posters to the wire to create a clothesline of images.

Add a Creative Outlet

Punk isn't just about what you wear and what you listen to --- it's about creating new art and remixing the old, injecting your world with new sounds, new words and new ideas. Reflect your punk ideals by creating a space in your bedroom where you can work your magic. Depending on your creative outlet, this might be a corner devoted to your guitar and amps, an easel with a canvas at the ready and paints nearby, a computer workstation loaded with a word processor, or a craft table with sewing machine and supplies. Or, go one step further and paint a wall with chalkboard paint. Now you have the perfect place for larger-than-life graffiti, doodles, song lyrics or whatever else occupies your mind. Once available only in black, chalkboard paint now comes in an array of vibrant colors; check your local paint store for different options.

Final Touches

To create your punk bed, choose sheets and a bedspread in dark, muted colors that complement the walls. If you've got a sewing machine and an inclination toward DIY, deconstruct an old pair of jeans to create your own throw pillows. Cut the graphics from a few old concert T-shirts and sew them onto the pillows as patches or use them as iron-on decals.

The punk look can be whimsical as well as hard-edged, feminine as well as masculine. For a girl's punk bedroom, a few touches of hot pink or eye-popping fuchsia can signal femininity without going overboard. Search independent craft stores and handmade craft sites such as Etsy.com for small touches like multicolored plastic skulls, removable vinyl wall decals, and other handmade goodies.
