Ideas For Painting On Cement Floors In Bedrooms

A concrete floor makes a surprisingly good canvas.

While most of us would love to have a bedroom with floors of hardwoord, marble, or deep plush carpet, sometimes we have to make do with concrete. Fortunately, with time and a bit of creativity, you can paint the concrete floor in your bedroom and turn it into a work of art.

Courtyard with Pool

Faux marble takes time but can look realistic.

If you fancy the ancient villa look and hold some artistic talent, paint the floor to resemble marble, with a realistic-looking pool (complete with goldfish) in one corner. Locate a book on faux finishing or trompe l'oeil painting to get in-depth instructions for mimicking texture and dimension with paint. "Trompe l'oeil," French for "fool the eye," refers to deceptively realistic paintings, often on or inside a structure.

Meditation Labyrinth

A labyrinth can be any size.

If you gravitate toward Eastern religion or philosophy, or simply enjoy activities that require slowness and contemplation, consider painting your bedroom floor with a labyrinth. The labyrinth, an ancient symbol and tool of consciousness, invites you to walk its twisting paths with reverence. It does not need to be huge. Indeed, for a tiny room, you could paint a "finger labyrinth."

Select two calming, complementary colors---perhaps colors that hold spiritual significance for you. Paint the entire floor with one color. Map out the labyrinth with chalk or watered-down, barely visible white paint. Look to art and photos of great labyrinths throughout the world for inspiration. Most labyrinths are round. Delineate its borders with the other paint color you chose. Along with the labyrinth, you could paint traditional icons of wisdom, enlightenment, and eternity, such as lotus blossoms.

Playground Games

You could paint a "board" for checkers and chess.

Whether the room belongs to a kid or a kid-at-heart, paint the floor a neutral shade that matches the walls. Use white paint applied roughly---to resemble chalk---to map out the boundaries of playground games, such as hopscotch or foursquare. White covers up easily, so if you get tired of the games, just paint over them using the neutral shade.
