Ideas For Decorating A Bedroom Done In Black & White

Use black and white elements to create a calming retreat.

Black and white create a striking color combination that can easily be dressed up or down with accessories or the use of an accent color sprinkled throughout the room. Black and white color schemes work in a bedroom meant for adults, teens or children, and can be paired with a modern, eclectic, vintage or retro style.

Walls

Paint the walls or put up wallpaper, a border or peel-and-stick wall decals. Although it goes against nearly every parents' core, a single wall painted black can add a lot of drama and interest to a room, particularly if there's a large piece of white furniture, such as a wrap-around headboard unit, against it or colorful curtains or paintings hung on it. If a black wall is too much of a commitment, consider using a wallpaper pattern that features a black and white design. Stripes, polka dots, damask or floral patterns are common choices. If a print is still too busy for you, consider hanging sheer fabric, such as black lace curtains, along one wall, even if there is no window. A simple border or pattern applied to the lower portion of the walls is another option.

Furniture

The use of black and white furniture is an obvious choice. However, you can mix the monochromatic look up by painting a pattern on your dresser or using a black and white zebra chair in the room. Balance white walls with black furniture or black walls with white furniture. Add an unexpected touch of color by installing a bright red velvet-covered headboard, placing a lime green ottoman at the foot of the bed or painting your dresser fuchsia. Utilizing only black and white furniture and wall coverings enables you to change your room's accent color simply by changing out a few accessories.

Bedding

Black and white bedding can be as simple as a single-color, reversible comforter or patterned duvet. Mixing patterns or alternating colors will have a dramatic effect. For example, consider using a black and white-striped comforter over black and white floral sheets with black and white damask throw pillows. Alternate between the colors by using black sheets and pillows with a white bed skirt and comforter. Add a single pillow to the bed in another color for interest.

Accessories

Accessorize the room with mostly black and white pieces, but add a couple of colorful pieces to break up the colorless decor. Introducing a couple of colorful pieces also gives you the option to change out only those pieces if you want a new accent color. For example, exchange a yellow lamp, pillow or rug for a lime green, pink, lavender or turquoise one. Add a burst of color with painted picture frames or a single large painting over your bed. Paint the frame of a mirror or bulletin board in a bright tone. Fill a white vase with colorful flowers. Alternate between black and white shelves.
