Do It Yourself Bathroom Makeover

A few inexpensive changes make an old bathroom feel like a spa.

Over time, bathrooms become outdated, looking worn out and tired. A newly remodeled bathroom gives a lift to the entire house; however, bathroom makeovers can be expensive and time-consuming. When the cost of a complete renovation does not fit into the budget, there are ways to make the bathroom look updated. With a few quick and inexpensive changes, your guests and family will feel as if they have entered a spa.

Instructions

1. Repaint the walls and ceiling. Applying a fresh coat of paint is an inexpensive and quick way to change the entire look of a room. New paint gives a clean, bright and new feel to the bathroom. An endless supply of colors and textures are now available. For example, paint the entire room one color or, for a decorator look, choose two or three paint colors that complement each other, the floor and accessories. Paint the molding a lighter version of the wall colors to create depth and dimension. A bathroom painting project is typically completed in a day or two for less than $100.

2. Purchase new bathroom linens. This is an extremely speedy and simple way to create a new feel to the space. Over time, towels, shower curtains, bathmats and washcloths take on a threadbare or dingy look. Beautiful bath towels are available at relatively reasonable prices. For example, use a neutral or white shower curtain and bathmat with fluffy white towels, and roll several extra towels and display them in spa-like fashion in decorative wicker baskets or on freshly painted shelves along with decorative gift soaps and an ornamental body lotion container. Another idea is towels and shower curtain that complement the new wall color or enhance certain colors in the floor, tying the whole room together.

3. Replace the flooring. This is a do-it-yourself project that pays big rewards. Old linoleum fades and gets cuts and flaws. Even tile can look outdated and old, depending its color and age. Carpet gets stained and dirty. Linoleum is available in beautiful patterns or even simulates wood, tile or marble. Both wood and tile come in many shades, colors and styles. Most home improvement centers offer free classes on install all of these products. Cost will vary according to the type and quality of the product chosen, but doing the work yourself greatly reduces the cost. Whether going for a dramatic look and feel or a clean and bright look, new flooring enhances the appearance and adds value to your bathroom and home.
