Ideas And Special Touches For The Guest Bedroom

A guest room should above all make your guest comfortable. Making guests feel welcome while respecting their need for privacy does not have to be difficult or expensive. The suggestions made here can be completed all at one time or as your budget allows. Keep things simple and make comfort your prime objective.

The Bed

Give the bed an inviting look by layering the bed linens to create a fluffy, comfortable pile. If your budget allows, start with a feather-top mattress. If this is not in the budget, add the layers just the same. In an interview with SouthernLiving.com, designer Beverly Baribault recommends a fitted sheet followed by a cotton top sheet; then a down blanket and another cotton top sheet are layered on next. She finishes with a down duvet and plump pillows. Use colors and patterns to accent each of the layers and the room. Add a throw pillow or two for a finishing touch. Use high-quality fabrics; the expense will be justified by the fact that as a guest room, they won't be used frequently and will last a long time. The higher quality will give your guest more comfort and provide a memorable visit.

Toiletries

Consider providing the same items found in hotels to make your guest more comfortable. Provide a bathrobe, draped across the bed with a fresh flower lying on top. A basket containing a fresh toothbrush, toothpaste, bar soap, small bottles of shampoo, conditioner, hand lotion and a comb are a welcome surprise for unexpected guests or those who may have forgotten their own. Roll up a towel and washcloth for each person who will be staying in the room and tie it with a pretty ribbon.

Amenities

Leave an alarm clock on the bedside table. A radio and reading lamp are nice touches. If there is a television, check that the remote control has fresh batteries and leave a current listing of programs in the room. A stack of books you think they might enjoy is a pleasant addition; include some that cover local history and interest. Some board games or video games for the television can help guests pass the time spent in their rooms. Mints on the pillows are a kind thing to leave. A note of welcome will make the visit more personal. A small coffee maker with a basket or tray of coffees, powdered creamer, sugar, stirrers and cups will permit guests to serve themselves without fear of disturbing the host.

Other Furnishings

If space allows, provide an empty closet and empty dresser. Drawers should be lined and free of dust. A decorative tray on top of the dresser makes an accessible place for guests to leave wallets, keys and loose change. An arm chair for reading or relaxing allows visitors rest without having to lie on the bed. Drapes that can close to block out strong sunlight or provide privacy will make a guest feel more secluded. Padded hangers, scented if the guest would like, can be left in the closet for a touch of luxury.
