Decorate A Victorian Style Bedroom

Decorate your bedroom in a Victorian style for a soft romantic or feminine effect.

Victorian-style decor includes heavily ornate furnishings with rich colors and fabrics. Blue and pink, along with red, gold, brown and white are common colors found in Victorian decor. A Victorian-style bedroom is often feminine or romantic. Decorate your bedroom in a Victorian style if you enjoy the look, want to decorate your Victorian house in like fashion or are fascinated with the era, which spanned Queen Victoria's reign throughout much of the 1800s.

Instructions

1. Use paint, wallpaper or fabric to cover the walls, setting the tone for the entire room. Floral patterns or scrolling designs were popular during the Victorian era. Pink, green, red or gold should be the dominant color in your wall treatments. If that is too much for you, opt for an ivory or beige with a scrolling or damask pattern.

2. Place at least one Oriental rug in your bedroom. A series of runners around the room will also work, as long as they have an Oriental pattern or look. Victorian bedrooms had hardwood floors, which will lend an authentic look to your bedroom if you have the option to install hardwood.

3. Situate your bed against a full wall, if possible. Victorian beds had heavily ornate head and foot boards or intricate canopies. Dark wood, such as mahogany or cherry, is best, although ornate brass or wrought iron will work as well. Place a bedside table on both sides of the bed. Marble-topped wood tables with carved legs were the norm. Add a chest and an overstuffed chair. A dressing table or vanity will complete your bedroom furniture.

4. Hang wall decor, such as paintings or mirrors, in gilded frames of gold or black. Candle sconces are another option, particularly for a romantic room. Needlepoint was widely used for decoration as well.

5. Adorn your windows with heavy drapes in rich fabrics, such as velvet. Lacey curtains can hang under the drapes. Use corded ties to tie back the curtains and include tassels. Your valance, if you opt to include one, should contain tassels as well.

6. Accessorize the room with needlepoint pillows, large floral arrangements, knickknacks, candles and add a gold- or silver-plated mirror and brush set. Set lacey doilies on tabletops or dressers. Include hand-painted lamps or lamps with intricate floral designs.
