Update A Victorian Bedroom

Victorian decor calls for dark woods, large furniture and ornate decoration. The overall effect is a feminine but sturdy design. While it is a beautiful design style, there are elements that may feel outdated. Fortunately, it is possible to keep a Victorian style in the bedroom but lighten it up to give it a more modern flair.

Instructions

1. Select just a few pieces of Victorian-style furniture. Victorian bedrooms are often overcrowded. Remove unnecessary furniture for a more minimalist, modern feeling. For example, use a Victorian-style bed, night stand and dresser, but don't add a vanity or overstuffed chair.

2. Pick colors that are light. Though Victorian styles traditionally use dark woods and deep paint tones, lighter colors are more modern. Paint the walls a light color, such as light pink or cream, and select texturing elements like blankets and coverlets or quilts that blend with the wall color.

3. Add delicate touches to the room. Instead of heavy draperies, use lace curtains. For wall art, use pretty floral or botanical prints framed in lighter-toned woods or gold tones. You can also arrange some antique-looking plates on the wall. Put just one or two decorative pillows on the bed rather than half a dozen.

4. Put up molding and trim around the room. It is an important detail for the Victorian style. Crown molding along the top of the walls adds elegant texture and detail. Paint it white.
