Design A Bedroom & Bathroom

The right design will transform a space.

We spend lots of time in our bedrooms and bathrooms. A cluttered, ugly space can stress us out, but a beautiful design can brighten our moods. If you have the time and money, redesigning your bedroom and bathroom can transform your space and you. However, it's sometimes difficult to know where to start, and it may seem like getting the bedroom and bathroom of your dreams is impossible. A little guidance may be just the push you need to get started on your dream design.

Instructions

1. Gather exact measurements for both rooms. You want to be sure you know every nook and cranny down to the last quarter inch.

2. Take an inventory. Track down what you may already have that you can still use, and fill in the blanks of what you need to replace. A lot of furniture is customizable to new designs. If you're on a budget, some of your wooden items can be sanded down and re-stained or painted.

3. Determine if you want a modern look or a more traditional look. Modern looks are sleek and feature stark lines and contrasts. They are understated and minimal. Traditional looks allow for more ornaments and frills, and they can be more whimsical.

4. Decide on a color palette. If the bedroom and bathroom are adjacent, think about complimentary colors that won't clash when the door is open. Stick with one major color and one to two accent colors. As DreamHomeDecorating.com says, "Know which colors make you feel good," and go with them.

5. Find linens. Linen patterns that fit your color palette usually determine the theme of the space. For the bedroom, curtains and bedsheets are a good place to start. Be true to your original color palette to keep the mood you want to set. For the bathroom, towels are an excellent item to help set the theme.

6. Decide on furniture. The bathroom likely won't need any furniture, but the bedroom may need a big overhaul. Major elements in bedroom furniture include the bed, night stands, a dresser or armoire and shelving. These items don't need to come from the some place, but you want to stay consistent with your wood type, colors and style. Having Victorian-style cherry wood nightstands and a modern dark stained oak dresser can throw the entire design off, and the combination looks sloppy.

Finally, be sure to keep in mind your measurements when shopping.

7. Shop for accessories. Accessories are what give a room personality. You only need a few accessories to tie the design together---lamps or lighting hardware, candles, mirrors and wall art work great in the bedroom and the bathroom.

8. Pull it all together. Painting is your first step in the makeover process, followed by adding furniture, and finally, adorning the rooms with accessories.
