Decorate A Bedroom Chic & Shabby

Light furniture and feminine details create a chic and shabby bedroom.

Creating a chic and shabby bedroom is an inexpensive way to add a new style to your space. Think about neutral colors, light wood, white furniture and distressed touches that give the shabby to the term "shabby chic." A shabby chic bedroom is best suited for a woman or girl, but also works for a guest bedroom.

Instructions

1. Start with the walls. Create a chic and shabby look by starting with a neutral tone on the walls. Shabby chic decor is all about mixing prints in neutral tones with feminine and distressed touches throughout the space. Paint walls a neutral light pink with a slight beige undertone. Another idea is to work with two neutral shades such as almond and ecru to create wide stripes moving vertically down the walls. Use a measuring tape and paint tape to align stripes for the walls, keeping each stripe about a foot wide to keep an open, airy feel in the space.

2. Go with light furniture. For a shabby chic bedroom, not all furniture has to match. To keep the vibe consistent, stick with all light or white furniture. Solid wood is best, but wicker and faux wood works too. If you are not adding color to the room with painted walls, the furniture can be warmed up by spray painting items with a low gloss metallic spray paint in pewter or bronze. Refrain from metallic shades that are too glitzy for a shabby chic bedroom.

Painting faux wood will create a distressed effect. Simply paint the furniture with a primer and then proceed with a light paint color such as ivory. The paint will naturally break up as the faux wood will not accept paint the way solid wood does but rather, it will create natural distressed areas in the corners of the piece.

3. Opt for girlish bedding. Bedding and any window treatments or chair cushions should have a girlish feel. Pale pink with a nude undertone, peach with a nude undertone, sage green, olive, beige and cream are all good colors for a shabby chic bedroom. Start with solid bed sheets and pillowcases and add style with a set of print shams and a print bedspread. Prints throughout the room do not have to match exactly, but should coordinate and be in the same color family.

4. Add personal touches. For a shabby chic bedroom, the personal touches should have an organic feel. Look for light wood picture frames for family and vacation photographs. Decorate with sea shells (real or faux) along bookshelves or a nightstand and delicate flowers (real or faux) like cherry blossoms, weeping willows and peonies in a simple ceramic vase.
