How Big Of A Storage Unit Is For Onebedroom Apartment

Storage units come in various sizes. When you need to store items, such as furniture, it's important to match the size of the storage unit with the amount of items that you need to store. Even when choosing a storage unit to hold the contents of a one-bedroom apartment, you consider size options based on whether the apartment is small or large.

50 Square Feet

A storage unit with 50 square feet of space is approximately the size of a walk-in closet and measures about 5 feet wide and 10 feet long. If you have a small amount of furniture and other items from a small one-bedroom apartment, this size unit may be a sufficient enough choice. A unit this size will hold one mattress and box spring set, a sofa and a dining room table and chairs. You can also manage to load boxes and miscellaneous items inside.

75 to 80 Square Feet

Depending on the particular storage facility, units from between 75 to 80 square feet should be available. This is about the standard storage unit size to hold all the contents from a one-bedroom apartment. This unit measures 8 feet by 10 feet for an 80 square-foot model, and 5 feet by 15 feet for a 75 square-foot model. About the size of a large walk-in closet or a small bedroom, you can basically store all the items that can be held in a 10-foot moving van inside these units. In addition to the items you'd be able to get inside a 50 square-foot unit, you can also store patio furniture, a stacked washer and dryer, plus a desk and other small items.

100 Square Feet

A storage unit with 100 square feet basically measures 10 feet by 10 feet and is about the size of an average-size bedroom. If you transport the apartment furniture in a 15-foot moving van, you should be able to adequately move all of the contents into a unit this size with no problem, as it can hold all the items from a one-bedroom apartment, or a small-two bedroom apartment. In addition to the standard bedroom, living room and dining room furniture of a one-bedroom apartment, you can also store a refrigerator, washer and dryer, patio furniture and many boxes and miscellaneous items.

Storage Considerations

When you pack the contents of your apartment and move them into a storage unit, make sure that you sufficiently protect everything. For example, place boxes that contain heavier items on the bottom, underneath lighter boxes. Also, use sturdy boxes that are not damp. Be careful if you get used boxes from a store. These boxes may be too worn or still damp from items, such as produce, that were transported inside them. Throw out items you know you won't use again, instead of wasting needed storage space on them.
