Design A Traditional Bedroom

The dark, heavy looking furniture and Queen Anne chair add a traditional style to this bedroom.

Traditional style uses ornately carved, dark wood pieces and gently curving lines to give a room a sense of elegance and history. Traditional style is usually more restrained and conservative, and favors symmetry and deep, rich tones. Many subsets of design styles exist beneath the "traditional" label, including the Victorian, Tuscan, Country French and Neoclassic styles. You can mix and match these style subsets, or you could choose a single style. Design your bedroom in a traditional style to create a relaxing, grown up retreat.

Instructions

1. Install crown molding around the room, which will give the room a more historical feel and therefore will also give the traditional furnishings you'll place inside the room a better context. Give the bedroom depth and warmth by painting it a deep, rich color such as ochre or burgundy, or you could paper the wall with stripes or floral patterned paper.

2. Purchase a bedroom set in a style that predates the twentieth century. Modern styles such as Scandinavian contemporary, mid-century modern and even craftsmen styles look out of place inside traditional rooms. A mahogany four poster bed with a hard carved headboard would compliment a traditionally designed bedroom.

3. Cover your bed with rich fabrics, such as velvet pillows, tasseled silk shams and a damask duvet. Hang draperies and swag valences in similar fabrics. Tie your curtains back with heavy gold cords.

4. Look for heavy, dark, highly buffed furniture pieces to complement your bedroom set such as a Queen Anne chair. Buy richly upholstered seating in deep colors if you'll have a seating area in your bedroom. Braiding, fringes, skirting, and nailhead trim are all appropriate on traditional style bedroom furniture.

5. Light the space with wall-mounted, brass candelabra sconces or with a large, gold and crystal chandelier. Flank each side of your bed with matching side tables and matching shaded table lamps to give the room a sense of order and symmetry.

6. Decorate your bedroom's walls with paintings in carved frames. Place a large, full-length Chippendale style mirror in your dressing area.
