Design A Teen Bedroom Without Painting The Walls

If your living situation prevents you from painting the walls, look to other ways of incorporating color when designing a teen's room. There are methods you can use to establish a design scheme that will allow your teen to express her personality.

Instructions

1. Choose a bed with a sturdy headboard that is strong enough for the teen to lean against.

2. Select a large decorative screen to place behind the bed. Allow the teen to choose the screen; it could feature her favorite colors, a landscape, a floral motif or any other subject matter that appeals. Alternatively, choose a screen that's made of wood and that can be painted. Paint it with images of skateboarders, sports figures or fantasy characters, according to the teen's tastes, or cover it with a mural. Use the colors in the screen as the basis for the room's design scheme.

3. Set the screen against a wall. Place the headboard of the bed about 4 to 6 inches away from the screen. This will create a focal wall for the room.

4. Select bedding that coordinates with the colors in the decorative screen. Use one or two colors that are featured in the screen for the comforter and pillows. Choose curtains in one of the colors. Add a rug that features one of the neutral colors in the screen, such as brown, white or gray.

5. Place a photo screen in a corner of the room. It should be smaller than the decorative screen and match one of its neutral colors. Allow the teen to fill the screen with his favorite photos.

6. Display your teen's artwork, trophies or pieces from a collection in a large bookcase. Paint the bookcase one of the colors used in the decorative screen. Make sure that it isn't as large as the screen; the screen and bed are the room's focal point.
