Bookcases and shelving help keep a room organized.
To organize a child's small bedroom, every space will need to be used for storage. Most bedrooms contain a bed, dresser, clothes, toys and school supplies. Zones need to be created to keep like items together. Different sized bins, shelves and containers will be needed. Once the room is organized, it will be easier to keep clean. Establish cleaning and organizing routines to maintain the room.
Instructions
1. Purchase furniture that has multiple purposes. Choose a bed that has a bookshelf for the headboard and storage drawers under the bed. Choose a futon for an older child so the bed can be a sofa by day and a bed by night.
2. Select a dresser that has multiple drawers with plenty of space to store clothes and toys. Place the dresser in the closet if there is enough room for it there.
3. Choose a desk that has a hutch to store books and supplies. Select a toy box that is also a bench.
4. Organize clothes in the closet by adding shelves, hooks and rods. Hang the clothes in organized sets to save on space. Hang a shoe organizer on the door to organize shoes and small toys. Place a clothes hamper in the closet to catch dirty clothes. Install hooks on the doors to easily hang clothes. Use any extra shelf space in the closet to store games and toys.
5. Remove the clutter and discard unused items from the bedroom. Sort the remaining items into piles by category such as toys, clothes or school supplies.
6. Create a home for each item that is staying in the bedroom. Analyze the size of the containers that will be needed before purchasing them. Use multiple bins, baskets and containers to organize items instead of one large bin. Choose bins and containers that are stackable.
7. Select containers of multiple sizes to store toys and games. Store these bins under the bed, on a bookshelf or in the closet. Label each bin with words or a picture of its contents.
8. Install shelving on the walls to display toys and mementos. Use a free-standing bookcase to store bins, books and toys.
9. Use a net or hammock hung from the ceiling to catch and store stuffed animals.
10. Make the bed every morning. Put away the toys and clutter every night before going to bed.
