Travertine Bathroom Ideas

Travertine is a natural stone product that is sold in both tiles and slabs for use in all areas of the home. Since travertine is filled with multiple holes caused by gases escaping during its formation, the stone has a naturally rustic appearance. Travertine is available in multiple colors and finishes, including tumbled, polished and honed, which allow it to complement many areas of the bathroom design.

Flooring

Travertine is an excellent material for bathroom floors. Since the surface of travertine is so often filled with holes, this natural texture helps travertine floors to be slip resistant when they are wet. Consider using travertine in a tumbled finish for a warm, soft and rustic look throughout the bathroom. Shower floors of the same material sized to 2-inches or smaller are the perfect complement.

Accent the whole bathroom design by taking a small band of the floor tile and using it as an accent strip through the wall tile. Using a smaller version of the same tile will help keep the design looking fresh.

Travertine Slabs

Travertine can be used in slab form on bathroom vanity tops, as well as seat benches in the shower. Since travertine's color palette is primarily made up of warm and neutral colors, use travertine on a vanity top as a complement to neutral bathroom tiles and in bathrooms with a rustic design.

If the bathroom includes a shower seat or bench, and travertine is being used on the vanity top, use a piece of the same slab on the bench and as the threshold to the shower to tie the bathroom design together.

If the design lends itself to a polished look, choose Travertine Navona or Silver Travertine, both of which are available polished. For a rich, matte look select Travertine Noce or Chiaro.

Wall Tile

Travertine can be used on the walls as well as on the floors in the bathroom design. For small bathrooms, consider using tiles of the same color on the walls as on the floor. This will help draw the eye upward, creating a visual effect that makes the room seem larger. Use a smaller size of the same color travertine, or change the direction of the pattern to add interest to the design. For example, use 12-inch travertine on the floor laid straight with 6-inch travertine tiles on the walls set on the diagonal.

Accent travertine tiles on the walls with a border of polished stone or glass tiles for a contemporary look. Run the border at eye level through the shower, or just below the chair rail around the entire room.

Handmade ceramic tiles, which have an uneven surface texture, can also be paired with travertine. Use handmade ceramic on the walls while travertine is used on the floor for a harmonious look that brings additional color and texture to the room. Accent the wall tile with a border of travertine mosaic to tie the two areas together and cement the design.
