Standard Height
For most hanging light fixtures, the standard is 30 inches from the bottom of the fixture to the top of the table, according to Danielle Galland of Parsons The New School for Design.
Variations in Height
In some situations, it may be necessary to have the fixture as high as 42 inches above the top of the table, or as low as 28 inches above it. These variations can depend upon the room, centerpieces or the size of the table, or even to salvage the view from a window.
Choosing an Ideal Height
Light fixtures don't always have to be hung at a certain height. When hanging, always be sure to leave space between the bottom of the fixture and the top of whatever centerpieces may be on the table, such as candles or a vase of flowers.
