The tropical landscapes of Thailand and Bali provide inspiration for Asian bathroom design.
Chami Jotisalikorn, Chamsai Jotisalikorn, Karina Zabihi and Luca Invernizzi Tettoni, authors of the book, "Contemporary Asian Bathrooms," explain that an atmosphere that integrates nature and relaxation is a huge source of inspiration for Asian-themed designs. These authors elaborate the emerging trend of Asian bathrooms inspired by the lush atmospheres found in Thai and Balinese resorts. Creating a zen-like atmosphere for the bathroom is possible with the right color scheme, accessories and additional personal touches.
Shower Area
Many resorts in Southern Asia are well known for their outdoor shower areas consisting of tropical plants and a rain showerhead. Replicate this feel by installing this type of bamboo showerhead, ideally below a wide skylight or window that provides the illusion of an outdoor space. Choose glass doors that permit a view of ferns, bromeliads and other tropical plants placed just outside the shower area. Use natural rock for the shower floor to enhance the outdoor feeling.
Avoid plastic shower curtains with a bamboo print or Asian lettering. Though these curtains are obviously Asian-themed, they are not authentic. If the bathroom requires a shower curtain, opt for a simple white shower curtain hung from a dark wooden shower rod.
Plants
An Asian-themed bathroom benefits from the use of plants. Place bamboo plants, orchids, birds of paradise or bonsai trees onto bathroom shelves or by mirrors. Bamboo plants, unlike orchids, are especially hardy and require very little maintenance. If you have a detached shower and separate tub, consider a more ambitious project by placing a narrow planter along the shower walls. In the planter, grow tall shoots of bamboo.
Color Scheme
Balinese and Thai bathrooms rely heavily on dark wood and warm colors. Paint the walls warm orange colors with dark red accents. If this color scheme is too bold, opt for a beige and dark brown combination. Line the walls with sandstone tile.
Accessories
Accessories, along with plants, make bold statements. Instead of using bland white towels, find ones with ornate patterns and rich colors. Add purple, white and red candles displayed in dark wooden candle holders. If space permits, place a stone or wooden statue of Buddha in the bathroom.
The fragrance of the bathroom is another way to add Asian flair. Choose potpourri with earthy or tropical scents. Reed diffusers with a vanilla or spice fragrance can also enhance the bathroom. Avoid fragrances not unique to the region like apple, pine or lavender.
Teakwood
Install dark teakwood shutters onto the windows or, if the bathroom is large enough, as a divider between the toilet and shower space. Select heavy, hand-carved wooden bathroom stands in which to place towels and reading materials. Use teakwood countertops to highlight an ornate glass or stone basin.
