Victorian Bedrooms

Floral patterns are common in Victorian bedroom decor.

Victorian decorating creates a sense of opulence, decadence and romance. The style is lavish, colorful and full of detail that is in stark contrast to other styles, such as Arts and Crafts or Colonial d cor. The bedroom is the ideal room in the house to use the whimsical and romantic Victorian style. As befits that era, the bedroom should be your oasis of comfort in the home.

Accessories

A Victorian bedroom should have plenty of accessories to adorn the shelves, dressers, nightstands and every available surface. Fill shelves with figurines, ornate picture frames, glass bowls and vases to decorate with a Victorian flavor. Adorn the walls with oil paintings of flowers, nature and people in the bedroom. Candles provide dim romantic lighting for the bedroom as well. Decorate the bed with plenty of pillows in floral patterns and soft lace fabrics.

Colors and Designs

The colors for the walls, fabrics and flooring in the room should be rich and vibrant. Choose colors such as blue, red, green, gold and chocolate brown to decorate the room. The upholstery on furnishings can have a floral motif. Floral carpets, too, are a popular choice for a Victorian-style bedroom.

Furniture

Dark, rich wood furnishings are common in Victorian decorating style. Choose pieces with ornate and intricate carvings to decorate the bedroom. Massive heavy furnishings give the Victorian bedroom the look of opulence. Canopy beds add romance. Include dressing screens with a floral pattern. The big bed with ornately carved headboard and footboard create a focal point for the d cor.

Textures

Victorian-era decorating made great use of silk, velvet, lace and heavy fabrics. Needlepoint designs work well on upholstery, wall hangings and toss pillows for the bed. Choose tasseled and fringed tiebacks for heavy velvet curtains. Ribbons, braiding and bows add to the ambiance.
