Designing A Bedroom

Master bedroom with headboard additions, nightstands with lights and chairs.

Bedrooms are important as they should be the oasis in your life, the place where you can come to relax and rest at the end of a long hectic day. When you design your bedroom, it is important to emphasize what helps you to relax and find ways to minimize or hide what frustrates you.

Bed

The centerpiece of the bedroom is normally the bed. As such it should be treated with a great deal of importance. Don't worry if you don't have a headboard for your bed or one that you like, it is relatively easy to create the illusion of a headboard with curtains, a bookshelf, paint or any number of creative ideas. Invest in linens for the bed. Beds today are often made with the sheets and pillows showing. Purchase nice sheets and at least two sets of pillows, one set you will use to sleep on, the others will be for decoration. Alternatives to bedspreads abound today. You can still use a bedspread or comforter, but alternatives include a blanket, a quilt, a coverlet or a throw. Consider the base of the bed, if it isn't attractive; get a skirt for the bottom. There are beds in a bag that include all of the pieces for the bed that may be a cost-effective solution. Once the bed looks fantastic, you have your inspiration for the rest of the room.

Paint

Use the bed linens as your inspiration to determine what color you want to paint your bedroom. You can select one or more colors from it to use. A dramatic color in the linens may be used to visually create the illusion of a headboard or as an accent color. Paint is a very inexpensive way to add drama to a room. Some think that a restful color such as light green or blue helps one to sleep, but a color that makes the people sleeping in the room feel good is what is most important.

Combating Clutter

Clutter causes frustration, so you need to eliminate it from the bedroom, which means you need to find a solution to storage. You don't need to purchase a matching bedroom suit, but find items that you like that will complement your style and hold your clothes. More people are installing large closets or adding closet types of furniture in their bedrooms. Consider rolling storage under the bed. If you need more room, you can lift the bed. Of course, you may have to make your own bed skirt to cover the storage.

Night Tables

A night table gives you a place to put your reading book, glass of water and a lamp. These can be purchased or a shelf can be mounted on the wall beside the bed to meet this need, if space requires.

Chair

At lease one chair in the bedroom can add functionality. A window seat is a compact and cozy addition. Your pets will love it, too.

Lighting

As in any room, lighting can make a difference. If you aren't using an end table, you will want to consider some type of light near the bed. Perhaps a wall sconce or a recessed light above the bed or a pole light next to it. Track lighting often provides a solution to focusing light in various places, without the need to rewire. Ceiling fans can be very pleasant in all weather, by adding a gentle breeze for cooling in the summer or circulating the heat in the winter. Chandeliers also add a very glamorous touch to the bedroom.

Flooring

If you have allergies you may wish to avoid carpeting, otherwise carpet may be a comfortable choice. Alternatives include wood, stone or tile. With any of the choices you may wish to include a decorative rug, if space allows.
