The Best Place To Put Shelves In A Bedroom

A shelf above the bed displays photos and accent pieces.

Shelving in a bedroom can be a stylish way to create open storage for clothes, shoes, wardrobe accessories, books and decorative pieces along an otherwise unused wall space. Depending on their intended use, shelving can vary in different areas of the bedroom. When planning the best place for shelving, consider the arrangements and shelving options that offer convenient storage or as a place to add decorative room accents in the bedroom.

The Opposite Wall

Across from the foot of the bed, a shelving unit is the best place to put books, plants and an entertainment center. A built-in wall of shelves that cover the entire wall maximizes the room's storage space by consolidating a massive collection of books and items into an organized arrangement on the wall. The book spines arranged in rows interspersed with artifacts, live foliage and decorative ceramics, glassware and handmade crafts comes together as a pleasant, intellectually inspiring focal wall in the room, opposite of the bed.

The Wall Furthest From the Door

The wall that receives the least amount of traffic in front of it is also the best wall to feature shelves. The risk of bumping into a shelf is lessened, and the shelves will not obstruct the flow of traffic into and out of the room. As the first wall that is visible when entering the room, shelves along the wall opposite the door are ideal for displaying room accent pieces.

Above A Writing Table

Extra storage space above a small writing table in a bedroom is a much-needed bonus for anyone who works on projects, assignments or correspondences in the bedroom. Slim shelves wide enough to hold paper, writing pads and small knickknack stationery bins outfit the writing area with extra-added storage space without borrowing some from the room's floor space.

Above the Bed

A single shelf or grouping of shelves no more than 8 inches wide arranged above the bed is an ideal location for featuring accessories that highlight the features and colors of the bed ensemble. The shelves above the bed are not ideal for book storage, as safety is a concern when it comes to storing heavy items right above the head of the bed. Instead, accent shelving centrally arranged above the headboard should only store lightweight room accents.

Above the Night Stands

The night stands are already mini storage centers on either side of the bed, so adding a few shelves above the nightstand provides more storage space for books and bedside items, all within an arm's reach from the bed. The shelves can also be a complete substitute for the nightstands. A modern, geometric shelving design constructed of 12-inch-wide wood boards will provide enough of a workable nightstand surface to house a lamp, clock and a few books.
