Bedroom Wallpaper Ideas

A bright or busy pattern can be used as an accent.

Wallpaper is a versatile accent that works for almost any room in the home. Wallpaper is a great alternative to paint because of the wide range of options. The decision to put wallpaper in the bedroom should be made carefully. Choose the wrong paper and you can end up getting little sleep over a bright color or a pattern that is too busy.

Create an Accent Piece

Wallpaper does not have to cover every wall in the bedroom. Just like paint, wallpaper can be put in strategic areas in the room to create an accent wall. This also helps keep the bedroom functional for rest and relaxation if a bright or busy wallpaper pattern is used.

A simple way to add wallpaper as an accent is to apply it to a single wall in the room. This provides an accent wall to help coordinate wall and furniture colors. This accent wall can also serve as a type of headboard to draw attention to the bed itself. Creating accent walls also works well in bedrooms that have a slanted or odd shaped wall to work with.

Keep It Calm

Bedrooms are primarily used for relaxation, and many colors provide a calming feeling. Light blues and greens can provide this calming feeling. Neutral colors and earth tones also provide relaxation in the bedroom. These colors are good choices for bedroom wallpaper. Neon colors and bright primary colors are not a good choice for the bedroom because these colors can work against trying to feel relaxed.

Keeping a calm feeling in the room is also attributed to using as few colors as possible. If the wallpaper pattern is too busy and uses more than three or four colors, you may not get the calming effect you desire. Avoid visual clutter by choosing colors in the wallpaper pattern that do not provide a stark contrast from each other.

Choose the Right Size

Another important aspect to consider when choosing wallpaper for the bedroom is the size of the pattern. If the pattern is too big, it can make the room feel smaller. This is more evident when the large pattern is only used on a single wall as an accent.

If more than one pattern exists in the room, vary the pattern sizes. Often a pattern will exist on the bedding and any furniture in the room. When mixing patterns, choose the wallpaper to have the smallest pattern since it will cover the most area. It is fine to mix different patterns in one room as long as the colors from each pattern blend together.
