Inexpensive Decorating Ideas For Bedrooms

Decorating a bedroom stylishly can be inexpensive.

Inexpensive decorations for the bedroom can change the look from ordinary to spectacular. The bedroom is sometimes hidden behind closed doors, as a place of comfort and sleep and a sanctuary for getting away from the world. But your bedroom can become one of the rooms you don't mind showing off to visitors. Don't let cost keep you from turning this into a room you're proud to show guests.

Decorating with Sheets

Many retail outlets offer annual or seasonal sales on linens and bedding. Sometimes, consumers are lucky enough to find sheet sets on clearance or drastically reduced. Others may find like-new sets at rummage sales or flea markets. Turn these bargains into inexpensive bedroom decorations. Make two flat twin sheets into a pair of curtains. Fold the top hem over on each and glue down with a hot glue gun or with fabric glue. This creates an opening for the curtain rod. Cut the outer hems off of the matching pillow cases, and fill with pillow stuffing. Glue the open ends together to create pillows to match the new curtains. Trim the elastic from a fitted sheet and cut the edges to form a square. Fold this piece to lay across the foot of the bed or over a chair for an added touch to bring the room together.

Spruce-Ups

When decorating a bedroom, keep costs down by using items already in the room. Make these items look new by adding decorative touches. Fabric and craft stores sell a variety of decorations and decorative trim for fabrics. Redecorate the items you have with these decorations. For plain cotton curtains and bedding, glue or sew on lace trim or create stripes with plain strips of hemmed fabric. Add strings of beads along the edges of curtains or furniture or around the walls. Add sequins to an older comforter and matching pillow shams. Use appliques to add a pattern or theme to the room. For example, iron-on apple transfers to the existing curtains and bedding, and paint apples on the walls or door.

Painting

Painting a room can be an inexpensive way to decorate. When you're painting, consider also painting the furniture in the room. You can easily transform tables, desks and dressers with a coat of paint. Use existing furniture or find used items at thrift stores or flea markets. Paint the walls of the room the selected color. Remove the hardware from the furniture. Strip the piece's original finish and apply a coat of white paint. Use a rag to roll color across and down the furniture to give a marbled look. Roll the rag across only a few times for touches of color or repeatedly for lots of color. For a textured look, apply the paint with a sponge.
