Decorate A Small Bedroom For A Teenager

Help your teen develop a design scheme that will personalize a small bedroom.

Designing a teenager's bedroom can be a difficult task regardless of the size of the room, but a smaller bedroom does pose some specific challenges. To create a space that seems larger, there are some simple design tricks you should try. To best please everyone involved, have your teenager be as involved in the decorating process as possible. Your teen's room will be her sanctuary, and should be designed with her best interests in mind.

Instructions

1. Sort through your teen's belongings and get rid of any unnecessary clutter. Your teenager is by nature in a transitional stage between child and adult. During this stage, your teen might acquire some knickknacks that no longer have purpose. Clear out the room of old toys, papers or items that are making the small bedroom seem even smaller.

2. Choose a color palette for the room that best meets your needs. Subtler shades and neutral colors will enhance the light in a room, making it seem larger and more airy. A bolder color scheme will make the small room feel cozy, but too dark will give the room a cavelike feel. Try combining neutral colors with bolder accessories, or painting an accent wall a more vibrant color for visual interest and a nice contrast.

3. Place your furniture in the room, starting with the largest piece: the bed. The bed is the focal point of any bedroom, especially in a smaller bedroom. Position the bed so it doesn't block a path into the room. Push the bed up against a far wall to create more floor space, making the room seem even larger.

4. Use organizational tricks to enhance the size of the space. Before placing items back into the bedroom, divide them into categories. Use shelving and decorative bins to organize these items for everyday use. For example, if your teen has a collection of some sort, organize this collection onto wall-mounted shelving or in plastic bins designed to fit under the bed.

5. Don't forget to use vertical space in the room. Avoid cluttering the floors with excess furniture or accessories. Use the walls in your teen's small bedroom to draw the eye up as this will make the room seem grander.

6. Emphasize your teen's personality in the space as much as possible. If your child has a favorite sports team or hobby, feature this in the room. If your child has trophies or collections, use these to develop a theme in the space. Engage your child's creativity to personalize the space. Because it is a small room, however, you might want to choose to highlight one collection to avoid making the room feel overly cluttered.
