Homemade Bedroom Curtains For Adults

Making your own bedroom curtains allows you to fully customize their look to match the rest of your decor.

When decorating a master bedroom, finding the right curtains to pull the room's look together is not always easy. While you can purchase window treatments in a variety of fabrics, colors and patterns at the store, you may not be able to find a set that completely matches your vision. One way to ensure that you get the exact curtains that you want is to make them yourself. With homemade bedroom curtains, you're only limited by the selection at the fabric store and your own creativity. There are a variety of attractive options to consider, so you should be able to find the right look for your bedroom.

Pale Linen

For a casual look in your bedroom, linen is an ideal material for making your own curtains. The fabric wrinkles fairly easily, but that only lends itself to the relaxed feel that the curtains provide and thus works well with cottage or beach d cor. Linen is available in a variety of colors, though the most common is usually a natural tan or beige color. However, linen curtains in other soft shades like blue, gray, lilac or butter are all attractive options for a bedroom as well. When using linen to make curtains, you don't have to line the curtains because the fabric is heavy enough to stand on its own. In fact, it often drapes better if it is unlined. Linen also lends itself to a variety of curtain folds, such as pin tucks and horizontal pleats.

Patterned Velvet

If you prefer a more dramatic look for your bedroom's curtains, consider using a patterned velvet material. Paisley provides an attractive, masculine look that fits an old world decorating style well. Velvet curtains definitely have a more formal, traditional feel, but you can use cut velvet if you prefer a more contemporary look. The curtains tend to look better when lined. You can use fringe, ribbons and other trims to dress up their look further. The one issue that you may run into when making velvet curtains is that the fabric tends to fray when cut, so avoid cutting off the finished edge of the material when possible.

Embroidered Sheers

For a romantic look on your bedroom windows, use embroidered voile to make sheer curtains. These curtains have a soft, airy look, but they do not block light very effectively. As a result, you should pair them with shades to keep the sun out of your bedroom. When making voile curtains, use enough fabric because they can look rather sparse if too little material is used. If you don't like the look of embroidered voile, it is also available in solid colors and printed patterns.

Luxurious Silk

Handmade curtains in silk instantly add an air of glamor and luxury to your bedroom. Silk is available in a wide range of colors and patterns, so you can find the ideal match for the rest of the room's d cor. You can even find embroidered silk to provide a more textured look for your windows. Line silk curtains for a formal look or go with unlined curtains for a more relaxed feel. However, sunlight can weaken silk, so line your curtains if your bedroom windows have heavy sun exposure. Because of the fabric's weight, the curtains usually look best if they are floor length. For a decorative touch, add beaded trim or fringe to the edge of the curtains.
