Decorate A Bedroom With Paneled Walls

Paneling is often in dark wood tones.

Wall paneling is beneficial because it insulates and soundproofs the room, works with many decor styles and is easy to install. Decorating with this wall covering is not difficult if you own your home, because you can paint or stain the paneling to change the look anytime you tire of it. Renting the apartment or home where the owner does not want you to disturb the paneling can be a bit of a challenge. It is possible to transform the room if you think of it as a whole and surround it with style.

Instructions

1. Use your windows to the best advantage in a bedroom with dark wood paneling. Hang window blinds or sheer curtains that allow the most natural light to enter the room. Often, these bedrooms tend to be dark and depressing unless you allow sunlight into the space.

2. Match the decor of the room to the color of your bedding. Since many homeowners do not want to cover the natural look of the paneling, changing the wall color is often not an option. Therefore, your best use of color comes from the bedding, curtains and upholstery in the room. Use throw pillows, rugs, picture frames and lampshades that reflect the main color in the bedding or one of the accent colors.

3. Hang large canvas art or prints on the wall if you want to disguise the look of the paneling. The eye will be drawn to the artwork, not the wall covering.

4. Install a curtain rod that spans the width of the room and add sheer curtains or other types of solid color curtains to the rod. This method effectively covers the paneling and adds colors and texture to the room.

5. Paint or stain the paneling to give the room an entirely new look if you are the homeowner.

6. Pick a focal point in the room and highlight it with special lighting. For instance, a decorative headboard or an elaborate painting can be the focal point with track lighting or a spotlight. This draws the eye to the focal point and minimizes the remainder of the bedroom.

7. Use liquid starch to place fabric on your bedroom walls instead of wallpaper. This gives it the look of wallpaper. You can easily peel it off and wash the fabric when it is time to move.
