Paint A Veneer Bedroom Suite

Veneer is a relatively inexpensive type of furniture composed of thin layers of wood glued on top of a core surface like cheaper wood or particleboard. If you want to paint a veneer bedroom suite, consider two important factors. First, because veneer is so smooth, condition the surface to accept paint, or you will have problems with adhesion. In addition, use a specific application method, or you may end up with sagging or brush strokes in the finish coat.

Instructions

1. Open windows to provide ventilation.

2. Remove everything from the room that might interfere with your ability to paint the veneer bedroom suite. Remove the mattress from the bed, and take it out of the room.

3. Sand all veneer surfaces with a palm sander loaded with 200-grit sandpaper. Sand along with the grain of the wood. Stop sanding when the surface feels slightly rough to the touch.

4. Wipe down all abraded veneer surfaces with a tackcloth.

5. Cover hardware on the dresser and end tables with blue painter's tape. Cover any other areas of the veneer suite you want left unpainted with painter's tape. Cover flooring with heavy-duty fabric dropcloths.

6. Apply a thin coat of primer to all veneer surfaces, using a 3- to 4-inch latex paintbrush. Allow the primer to dry for three hours. Wash the brush with water.

7. Pour 1 gallon of paint into the 2-gallon painter's pot, measuring with the measuring cup. Stir in 1 oz. of water, using the wooden stir stick. Stir for at least five minutes.

8. Apply two thin coats of paint to all veneer surfaces, using the paintbrush. Do not overapply as this will lead to runs and sagging in the final finish.
