Decorating a boy's bedroom involves a lot of things, but the most important aspect is the color of the walls. The wall color pulls the whole theme together, and makes the look complete. You can use wallpaper for this, but paint is usually easier, and with today's paint mixing advancements, there are thousands of colors from which to choose.
Outdoors
Bring the outdoors in with themes involving forests, the Wild West, beaches, oceans or mountains. Colors to choose from include greens, blues and earth tones. Paint murals on the walls, choose a solid color or two-tone the walls with the help of a border or chair rail a few feet from the floor.
One option is to use a sand color on the lower part of the wall and ocean blue above, giving the room the feeling of an island surrounded by water. Wall stickers can be used to decorate walls if you're not the artistic type.
Sports
Sports is usually a good way to go with boys. Pick his favorite team and use the team's colors for the walls. Paint them in solid colors, as in one blue wall, one black wall and one white wall to keep the task simple. For more complex painting, line the walls off with paint tape and create stripes of the team's colors.
Another idea is to paint all the walls the main color, such as Panther blue for the Carolina Panthers, and splash the secondary colors on the wall in a random fashion. Cover the entire floor with a drop cloth to keep paint from getting on the carpet, and you might consider covering the ceiling as well.
Cartoons
Pick his favorite cartoon character and use it as the theme for the room, complete with bedspread, rugs and wall hangings. Choose two or three of the character's main colors for the walls. In the case of Mickey Mouse, the choices are red and black, while Charlie Brown is yellow and black. Use these colors as solid colors for the walls or in a more random way, as with the sports team.
Some characters might give you an idea. For example, Charlie Brown wears a yellow shirt with a zigzag black stripe across the middle. Paint the walls yellow with a zigzag line around the room at chair-rail height.
