If you have a business with two bathrooms that you want to designate male and female, try labeling the restrooms accordingly. It's easy when you make your own restroom signs to put on the bathroom doors. Use a theme for the signs that corresponds to the theme of the d cor in your home or business, or focus the theme specifically on the design of the bathroom.
Western
Draw an outline for two western themed shapes on a sheet of plywood. Consider shapes such as cowboy boots or cowboy hats. Cut the shapes out when you're satisfied with the design using a jigsaw, then sand the edges with a fine, 150- to 180-grit sandpaper. Use stain to create an antique look to the wood and allow it to completely dry. Use a pencil to write western-style lettering on the signs, "Cowboys" and "Cowgirls" or "Stallions" and "Fillies." Paint your lettering the color of your choice and hang the signs prominently in the center of each bathroom door.
Animals
Many craft stores carry precut pieces of wood that are already shaped in various forms, such as those shaped like animals. Select two animal-shaped pieces of wood that correspond to your theme, then design artwork and/or lettering for each sign as desired on paper. Lettering might read, "Bucks" and "Does" or "Billys" and "Nannys," for example. Either paint the wood, stain it or apply polyurethane for a high-gloss finish, and then paint on your lettering in a style that suits your theme.
Cartoons
Cartoon character themes are popular on signs. Bugs Bunny, Sponge Bob and Mickey Mouse cartoons provide a wide variety of characters to use in designing your bathroom sign. Use square pieces of wood to make your sign, with each piece cut using the same dimensions to fit your door. Paint the wood bright cartoon colors, with figures of your cartoon characters above, below or to the side of your sign lettering. In paint, write "Minnies" or "Mickeys" or "Sponge Bobs" and "Sandys" on the signs.
