Gothic bedrooms spark images of castles, gargoyles or dragons and other similar architectural elements. Skip black walls since the color should suggest a Gothic atmosphere rather than Halloween. Consider deep purple, garnet or midnight blue for colors. Select one wall as an accent. Paint faux stone or faux arched windows, or stencil fleur de lis as a border. Coordinate the walls with the rest of the furnishings, whether Gothic Victorian, Gothic Oriental or Gothic punk.
Instructions
Paint a Gothic Style Bedroom
1. Remove all bedroom furnishings or place them at the center of the room draped with a drop cloth. Start by prepping the walls. Fill in any cracks with Spackle and then allow to dry completely. Smooth areas with Spackle with medium-grit sandpaper.
2. Clean all wall surfaces and baseboards with a damp rag or sponge. Line baseboards and doorway molding with painter's tape to protect them from wall paint.
3. Cover the floor with a drop cloth and begin painting three of the four walls in rich, deep purple, blue or garnet. Leave the wall that the bed will rest against in its original state for now--that will be your accent wall. Start by brushing in corners around the molding or trim and work the paint inward. This method will alleviate painting marks from the brush after the paint dries.
4. Move on to rolling the walls with the paint roller. Make a start with the area that was first painted near the trim or molding, working your way inward. Roll with long strokes making the letter V. Go back and fill in any missed
5. Paint the entire accent wall in the base color using the same techniques. Once dry, give it another coat.
6. Using chalk, stencil with a template or draw freestyle a pattern of bricks. Keep the brick shapes in proportion with the size of the room and the wall space. Make the pattern in varying sizes similar to castle bricks.
7. Produce the textured brick appearance by dipping the cloth or sponge lightly into the glaze. Then apply at the edges of the chalk markings or the outline of the brick shapes. Work on one stone at a time for consistency. Once dry, go over the brick edges or "grouting" area with an artist's brush and overlay lightly. Allow to dry before replacing furniture.
