Blue linens on a bed create a soothing feel.
When decorating your bedroom, the first thing you have to think about is the furniture. The furniture you select will be the deciding factor in how the rest of the room is decorated. After you've selected the perfect furniture, you also need to consider arrange it in the room. Only after the furniture has been selected and arranged can you think about decorating the rest of the room. Make your bedroom your perfect sanctuary by choosing the correct furniture and arranging it properly.
Selection
Before you select furniture for your bedroom, consider the purpose and size of the room. Will you be watching television in the bedroom? If so, you will need a unit to hold the TV. What about reading in bed? In that case, you will need a good lamp and probably a side table. You also might want some kind of chaise lounge. If the room is large, you can select almost any type of furniture, from the sleekly modern to elaborately ornate. If the room is small, stick with clean, traditional lines in the furniture and choose items on a smaller scale so the room does not feel crowded.
Arrangement
The bed is the focal point of the room. As such, most people place it so that when you enter the room, the first thing you see is the bed with the headboard facing you. If this offends your sense of privacy, however, consider putting the bed on the opposite wall, so people entering must turn to see the bed. Avoid placing the bed under a window, where drafts can seep in and chill you. In addition, placing a bed in front of a window can block valuable light from entering the room. If you have a dresser with a mirror, set that opposite the window, so the mirror can reflect more light into the room. If your bedroom is very large, setting the bed at an angle in the corner of a room is very dramatic, especially if it is a four-poster bed. Small tables on either side of the bed are functional and attractive. If space is limited, install floating shelves on either side of the bed and use those as tables instead.
Dressing the bed
When choosing bedding, find the most luxurious you can afford. Your bed should give you the utmost comfort. In large rooms, almost any pattern or color goes. Consider, however, that a bedroom should be soothing. Soft blues, grays, creams and sage green evoke a feeling of calmness. Bright colors should be avoided, unless you are decorating a child's room. Even there, consider the effect loud colors might have on a child who is supposed to be sleeping. In small bedrooms, it is best to stick with monochromatic color schemes and subtle patterns. Add complementary throw pillows to your bedding to give your bed a finished look.
