When you change your lighting in a room, it changes the entire appearance. However, lighting needs to blend with the other furniture in the room and not just the room size. When you match the dining room light fixtures to the table size and not the room size, you create balance throughout the room.
Instructions
1. Keep the light fixture proportionate to the table size. If you have a large dining room table, then a large chandelier or light fixture is in order.
2. Get light fixtures that are the right width, especially avoiding any that are too wide. The fixture should never be wider than the width of the table, less 12 inches. If the light fixture is wider, guests and family have a tendency to hit their head as they exit the table.
3. See how far down the light hangs. For larger tables, a low-hanging fixture can be appropriate, but smaller tables need lights that are closer to the ceiling.
4. Create a template of cardboard that matches the size dining room light fixture that you want and hang it over the table by a string. This gives you an idea how the light looks once it's in your home.
5. Check the amount of light the fixture emits. It should pool over your table and diffuse throughout the room. You can always add a dimmer if the dining room light gives off too much brightness, but you can't boost the glow as easily.
