Bedroom Setup Ideas

Your bedroom should encourage peaceful rest.

Setting up your bedroom is easy to do. Your bedroom furniture and the size of your room determine your setup options. The key element to a positive bedroom layout is the impression of rest and relaxation the room conveys. The layout also should make good use of the space available without appearing cluttered.

Basic Setup

The way to achieve a balanced room design is to place the bed against a wall so that it's centered in the room. The bed's location should not block windows and doorways. Allow for enough space to walk around the bed. Place bedside tables with appropriate lights (lamps) next to the bed or use wall sconces for lighting. Place the dresser and other storage units on the remaining walls, allowing enough room to access drawers. Consider storing items in containers under the bed when additional storage space is needed. An ideal bedroom setup should allow sufficient floor space that the room does not feel cluttered.

Small Space Setup

A small bedroom space can limit bedroom setup options, but it also can provide an opportunity for inspiration. Consider forgoing a traditional, solid wood headboard for one with lighting built in. This eliminates the need for bedside tables. Place the bed next to a window along the same wall or the nearest adjacent wall. This allows light to filter in without obstruction. Hang wall shelves along the longest wall rather than using a bulky dresser. Choose a reflective material for the shelving unit to make the space appear larger. Place either a small table or low shelf next to the bed if space allows. Position a chair or other seating element on an angle facing the bed or looking out toward the door. This breaks up the straight lines of the furniture placement and adds dimension. Mount a television on the wall across from the bed or on the wall opposite the seating.

Feng Shui Setup

One of the fundamental tenants of feng shui is to promote positive energy flow by making the bedroom a place for relaxation and rest. The bed's position is essential to allow for the flow of energy in feng shui design. Do not place your bed underneath a window or directly across from the door. The door allows negative energy to enter, which can impact your sleep unless something is there to obstruct its path. The window allows light to come through. Light is energy and therefore a bed placed in front of the window serves as an energy blocker. Instead, consider bed placement facing the window and away from the door. The bed position should allow equal space around both sides with a solid wall at its back. Avoid placing mirrors on walls that reflect the light from the windows and the energy entering from the door. Place taller furniture pieces to the left of the bed and locate smaller pieces to its right. Do not place furniture at the foot of the bed.
