Stabilize dining chairs by removing the wheels.
If you have dining chairs that roll too easily across the floor, take the casters off to make the chairs stable. The casters are the balled feet that enable the chairs to roll. Sometimes, especially with heavy chairs, this is a benefit. At other times, the casters move too easily and this could cause difficulty for people trying to sit in the chairs. Removing the casters only takes a few minutes with common household tools.
Instructions
1. Turn the chair over or lay it on its side so you have access to the wheels. Examine the wheels where they attach to the chair. If they are attached with screws, use the correct screwdriver to take the screws out. If there are no obvious signs of screws, try a different removal method.
2. Place a couple of drops of oil on the wheel where it attaches to the chair. Twist the wheel assembly to the left. Some caster wheels are threaded and may be manually unscrewed. If one wheel comes off this way, repeat the process for the rest of the wheels. If not, then it's time to try something else.
3. Put a little oil on the area where the wheel is inserted into the chair leg. Hold tightly to the wheel and give it a pull to take it out of the leg. Many casters are press fit into the chair legs and can be removed in this manner. If the casters start to move, but are wedged in firmly, use the slotted screwdriver to help pry the stems of the wheels out. Once you have enough of the stem showing, you can use the pliers to get a better grip to pull the wheel off. Repeat this until all the wheels are off the chair.
4. Peel the backing off of the felt or plastic pad. Place this pad over the bottom of the chair leg in place of the wheel. This will help protect your floor and the chair leg from damage. The pads are available at many home improvement and hardware stores.
