Well-decorated shelving can change the look of a room.
Shelving is an important tool when storing items such as books and keepsakes, but shelving is also a decor element in any room. In the bedroom, you can use shelving to store items off the floor and keep your latest novel close by. Choose shelving that fits into your room's decor both in size and color. Long shelving units will make the room look longer, but also take up floor space. Tall shelving units have the opposite effect.
Instructions
1. Use long floating shelves to create straight, leading lines across the room. Use white colors on a brightly painted wall, such as pink or yellow, for a cheerful look that really stands out. Alternately, try long black shelves on a more muted wall, such as dusty blue, for a sleeker more subtle look. Stack three or four shelves on the wall so they are evenly hung and fill them with items that coordinate with the room.
2. Stagger short floating shelves on the wall to create a casual look. Use black, white or plain wood shelves that coordinate with your decor. Fill a wall with staggered shelves or use four or five in one space. Candles look nice on staggered floating shelves and are less of a fire hazard because they don't have another shelf right above them.
3. Install permanent wall units in the room. Put one wall unit on each side of the wall and put a long dresser or other storage unit between the two bookcases. Use the shelves to tastefully store your items. Use baskets to hide clutter and put decorative objects, such as an ornamental clock, in the shelves to help give it a finished look.
4. Place a single shelving unit, such as a tall bookcase, in the room. Use one that complements the room's decor. For example, if the room has a high ceiling, you should use a tall bookcase. If you have a wide space to fill, try a longer bookcase. Decorate the back of the bookcase with wallpaper to give it some color and coordinate with the room.
5. Use cube shelving furniture instead of straight shelves to better organize your room and for a piece that catches the eye. Buy individual units you can stack or set together in different arrangements so you can change the look later. For a fun look, paint or wallpaper the back of each cube in coordinating colors that will perk up the room.
