art deco bedroom

An art deco bedroom is perfect for couples with competing styles. He might want a modern look while she wants her room to feel luxurious. He might hate accessories & she might love the color pink. An art deco bedroom is also a unique spin on a small dorm room or even a nursery. Here is get the look on a budget.

Instructions

1. Make your own headboard. A common piece of furniture in an art deco bedroom was an upholstered headboard. These can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars at the furniture store. You may be able to upholster your existing headboard using a staple gun, fabric & batting. This will only cost a few dollars & can really change the look of your bedroom set. It makes things feel softer & more feminine & just takes a few hours to complete. If you aren't working with an existing headboard try this tip that is used on a lot of decorating shows. Upholster light weight squares of wood. You might even be able to attach these to the wall with construction strength Velcro. The higher your headboard, the better. After all that work you don't want it to get lost in the room. Try your hand at making your own buttons to add an interesting detail that will make your headboard seem custom.

2. Bring in unusual side tables. Look for elegant mirrored night stands for your art deco bedroom. Just make sure that you are ok with occasionally windexing all of the fingerprints off of these. They will help reflect light around the room. Some people say that mirrors even make a small room look larger. Mirrors were used a lot in the art deco style. You'll just be using them in a unique way.

3. Glitz it up. Art deco is elegant without being too fussy. You want to use elegant fabrics & rich colors in your art deco bedroom. Think of Old Hollywood style & then subtract anything that you can't afford or that you don't agree on as a couple. This will turn your bedroom into an elegant retreat where you can escape the everyday stresses of life.

4. Hit the thrift store. Look for furniture in a waterfall style. This is when a piece has almost a bull nose edge instead of sharp lines. You might not be able to find an entire matching set. However, a lot of deco furniture was finished in the same wood tone. This way you'll be able to mix & match your pieces to save even more money.

5. Look up. The ceiling is probably the first thing you see when you wake up in the morning. It mine as well look good. No detail is forgotten in an art deco bedroom. More opulent deco rooms had gold or silver leaf on the ceiling. Others had painted tin ceilings. If you don't have a tray ceiling try making a square out of molding. Then you can paint or wallpaper inside the square to add interest. Just make sure it's subtle so it doesn't dominate the entire room.

6. Add in extra storage. While you're at the thrift store, look for armoires which are often common in art deco bedrooms. This helps add height to the room, as well as extra storage. You might even find one that still has a large original mirror on it. Consider turning this into a makeshift office that can be completely hidden away if you are short on living space.
