Set Up A Small Girl'S Bedroom

A small space can be a decorating challenge.

The challenge in decorating is when you're not sure if you have enough space to include everything you want and need in a room. This is particularly true in a child's bedroom when the child feels a special affinity for each and every possession she owns. Fortunately, there are a few easy ways to make a girl's small bedroom feel more spacious.

Instructions

1. Include only the pieces of furniture that will be used in the room. A small room holding a twin-sized bed, small nightstand and chest-of-drawers will naturally feel larger than a room filled with too-large furniture or too many pieces of furniture. You can even skip the nightstand by attaching a small shelf next to the bed to hold her clock.

2. Choose light-reflecting wall and ceiling colors. Dark paint absorbs light, giving the optical illusion that the room is smaller than it actually is. Opt instead for a light color paint that reflects light and makes the room feel naturally larger. The same is true of ceiling color. Go with a pure, crisp white paint on the ceiling, or a color that is one or two shades lighter than the wall color.

3. Limit the number of furnishings. The same decorating rule that applies to furniture extends to furnishings. Edit what she has and help her decide what she truly wants to keep and what she can do without. That old rocking chair that's been in the corner since she was a toddler may find a better life in another room. If she has three lamps but only needs two, considering repurposing the other. If the area rug on the floor is dingy or too busy for the space, give it to charity. The adage, "less is more" is absolutely true when decorating a small bedroom.

4. Find creative ways to organize. If she has a larger-than-average closet, place the chest-of-drawers in the closet rather than in the room. Plastic containers that were originally intended to store wrapping paper can easily hold her important papers, craft supplies and magazines, and be stowed away under the bed. A row of small baskets hung on the wall can house her hair supplies and jewelry. Rather than allow it to take up floor space, hang a small bookshelf on a wall to display her books and sentimental items. A piece of fishing net hung in the corner of the room will easily hold those stuffed animals she's not quite ready to part with.
