Decorate A Dining Nook

A dining nook is an informal place for meals and conversation.

If a dining room represents the formal place to eat in the house, then a dining nook stands for the opposite. A dining nook that has been decorated in just the right way encourages around-the-table conversation over steaming cups of hot tea. These cozy rooms are often just a corner of the kitchen decked out specifically for this purpose, but sometimes they are full-blown rooms in their own right. They may feature many of the elements of the kitchen or be visually separate.

Instructions

1. Consider ways that you can harmonize the decor in the dining nook with the decor style you've chosen for your kitchen. Several ways exist to accomplish this, including coordinating paint colors, making use of common patterns in fabrics, or harmonizing furniture styles.

2. Paint the walls of the dining nook a different color than the walls of the kitchen. To make the space really stand out, consider complementary or contrasting colors. For example, if your kitchen walls are golden yellow, choose a brick red for the dining nook. This separates the two spaces visually, making them each stand out.

3. Tie the two rooms together with color and design elements if the dining nook is separate from the kitchen. Beside using paint to accomplish this task, choose common decorative elements like black and white tiles on the floor or artwork featuring the same thematic elements or style, or decorative pottery accents.

4. Play up the decorative potential of a side bar or hutch in the room by going with glass or chicken wire on the front of the doors if that is what you've used in your kitchen. This allows you to see your beautifully colored plates and vintage colored glassware stored on the shelves. This is both decorative and functional, because it makes the tableware convenient to the table.

5. Use wall or corner shelves to display decorative food stuffs to echo the accessories in your kitchen. These might include bottles of flavored vinegar and oil or jars full of colored pasta. This allows you to bring additional decorative elements into the room without taking up too much wall space.

6. Hang art prints on the wall. These could include photos featuring fruits and vegetables, a painting of a Parisian cafe, illustrations of chefs or other food-related pieces of art. Position these on the wall near the table to help solidify the table as a focal point.

7. Keep certain kitchen elements within reach for easy access and make them part of the decor. For example, if you have a service pass-through in the wall between your nook and kitchen, or a nearby counter, store the microwave, coffee maker or toaster there so that they are handy to both the nook and the kitchen.

8. Create a cozy feeling in the room by substituting a padded bench for a couple of the chairs. Position the bench in the corner. Select an upholstery fabric that complements any curtains, rugs and place mats.
