A bedroom is more than just a place to lay your head, it is an expression of who you are and what you like. Sometimes this personal expression is harder to achieve if you have designer tastes on a thrift store budget. If you are thinking of giving a new look, but just don't have the money to buy new and completely redesign the space, you can still freshen up your décor by doing it yourself.

1. Spruce up your space with a coat of paint. If your budget will not allow you to change up your furniture or choose all new bedding, a coat of paint might be the right option for you. For fewer than $20, you can buy cans of paint that will transform your bedroom.
2. Scour thrift stores and flea markets for pieces to decorate your space. Often the only difference between a piece you would find in an antique shop or at a yard sale is the price tag, so keep a lookout for interesting furniture, fabrics and accessories you can use to redesign your bedroom.
3. Give new life to old furniture. If you can't buy new furniture to change your space, try refurbishing old furniture. Sand and repaint your existing chairs and dressers to give them a fresh look. With a large piece of fabric and an inexpensive sheet of upholstery foam, you could upholster a tired old headboard.
4. Be as hands-on as possible. For example, you might not to be able to afford drapes to frame the large windows that are the focal point of your room, but you might be able to sew attractive curtains that will make a strong statement for a fraction of the cost.
