Decorate A Cozy Attic Bedroom

A cozy attic bedroom is perfect for a child.

Attic bedrooms are often small with low, slanted ceilings resulting in limited useable space. Bedrooms in the attic sometimes have little natural light as a result of small or no windows, making them dim and cave-like. But with the right decorating strategy you can make these petite spaces charming, welcoming and functional. Your attic bedroom can be a snug haven for guests, the perfect getaway for a teenager or a comfy space for a child to sleep and play.

Instructions

1. Create storage in the space between the sloped ceiling and floor with built-in cupboards and shelves. Paint them a bright, cheery color in a child's room. Opt for something more subdued in a guest room. Place a steamer trunk or wooden chest at the foot of the bed to corral linens and seasonal clothing.

2. Make the room appear larger than it is with a light color scheme. Paint the walls and ceiling a soft shade of white and choose white sheets and a pastel pink, blue or green duvet cover and shams.

3. Warm up the room with a deeper color scheme if space is not an issue. Opt for a jewel tone like burgundy or royal blue on the walls and a lighter shade of the same color on the ceiling. Dress the bed in crisp white sheets and a duvet cover and shams the shade of the walls.

4. Keep the window dressings simple. Choose neutral Roman shades or simple white or natural-colored cotton curtains. Opt for white sheers to filter natural light while giving you privacy if that's an issue.

5. Lay sumptuous, deep-pile carpet for a cozy feel underfoot. Give the room an inviting country vibe with wood floors dotted with handcrafted rag rugs. Go shabby chic with a worn Oriental area rug.

6. Let the sun shine in by installing a skylight or enlarging the existing windows.

7. Draw the eye upward with a chandelier hung from the ceiling. One with chipped paint and a few missing crystals gives the room a shabby chic vibe.

8. Choose single beds and place one on each side if the room is small. Put a bedside table or steamer trunk between them with enough space for a lamp, alarm clock and glass of water. If you prefer a double bed, opt for a graceful iron frame that takes up less visual space than one of solid wood. Choose a low platform bed if you want to make the ceiling appear higher.
