Chair ties used at a wedding reception.
Fabric ribbons and ties are an excellent way to quickly change the appearance of a plain chair slipcover. Ribbons can be sewn ahead of time in colors and patterns that match your dinnerware, napkins and place mats. The wider the ribbon, the more impact the design on the ribbon will have on the decor of your chairs. It is a good idea to practice several attractive bows and knots so that you can easily tie these on the day of the event. Making ribbons is straightforward and will take only a few minutes.
Instructions
1. Launder and iron the decorator fabric you want to make into ribbons. Look for very high-end fabric remnants that are deeply discounted. These will make elegant-looking ribbons that will hold up well over time.
2. Measure the width of the chairback. Multiply the width by 2 and add 48 inches. This is the length of a ribbon when a bow will be used. Multiply the width by 2 and add 24 inches for the length of a ribbon when a knot will be used.
3. Determine the width of the ribbon. A narrow ribbon is 3 inches wide. A wide ribbon is 6 inches wide. Select the width you prefer. Multiply the width by 2 and add 1 inch for seams. Cut your ribbon fabric to this width. Cut ribbon fabric the length you determined in Step 2. Cut one piece for each chair.
4. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, face sides together. Sew a 1/2-inch seam along the length. Center the seam in the middle and sew one end at a 45 degree angle. Clip the corner and turn the ribbon inside out. With the seam in the center, iron the sides and the end seam.
5. Place the angled end over the raw end and cut the fabric along the angle. Clip the pointed end off 1/2 inch from the end. Turn the edges under 1/2 inch and sew a top seam along the end of the fabric 1/8 inch from the folded edges. Iron the end. Repeat for each ribbon.
