Convert A Formal Dining Room To A Casual One

Place mats show off the lovely wood of your table.

Place a table under a chandelier, group six matching chairs around it and you already have a formal dinning room. Add a white tablecloth, a floral centerpiece, candlesticks and your good crystal and china, and the room looks ready for a formal state dinner. But you may want to eat at a table with flowers, candles and nice dishes, but formal is not your style. Just a few changes can change your dinning room from formal and fussy to casual and comfortable.

Instructions

1. Replace your brass or crystal chandelier. An aluminum or plastic fixture will give a room a more modern look, while a fixture made from natural materials, such as wrought iron or wood, will give the room a more natural feel.

2. Swap formal window treatments for casual ones. If your window treatments are damask or silk, swap them for linen or cotton curtains. Remove any fussy trim from your window treatments and take down sheers.

3. Move the furniture to an asymmetrical arrangement. When one side of the room is exactly like the other, the room has a stiff formal feel. Place your table at an angle, and swap one or two chairs for chairs of a different design.

4. Remove your tablecloth and use a table runner and place mats. Let the pretty surface of your table show. Choose linens that complement your dishes.

5. Float flowers in a glass bowl for a light and airy centerpiece. Use pillar candles instead of candlesticks. For a more rustic centerpiece, arrange fruit or vegetables in a wooden bowl.
