Tips For Decorating Restrooms

Brushed metal adds dimension to traditional fixtures.

Artful use of decor can turn a plain restroom into a sumptuous retreat, a cheerful hub of activity, a cool and serene hideaway or a sleek, functional space. Choose colors, fabrics and fixtures that convey the atmosphere you want to establish in the room, marrying form with function to create a design that is both practical and pleasing to the eye.

Paint and Wallpaper

Paint comes in a full spectrum of colors and in a variety of finishes. The glossier the finish, the easier it is to clean. A semi-gloss finish is a common choice for bathrooms, offering a durable, easily-washed surface for the walls. Some paint formulas include a mold and mildew inhibitor that helps reduce unwanted growth in the steamy restroom environment.

Wallpaper adds dimension and pattern to bathroom walls, but the natural humidity of the room can cause the paper to peel or discolor. Water-resistant, washable wallpapers designed for humid areas offer an alternative to traditional papers and adhesives.

Flooring

Flooring options for restrooms include hardwood, laminate, natural stone, vinyl, linoleum, porcelain tile and ceramic tile. Each type of flooring has benefits and drawbacks. For example, hardwood is softer underfoot than stone or tile, but it is vulnerable to water damage, a constant threat in a bathroom. Vinyl resists moisture and is more affordable than most other options, but it lacks the authentic appearance of natural stone. Consider the overall design of the room when choosing flooring. Marble might work in a more formal bathroom while vinyl or laminate are solid choices for a casual, family-friendly space. Add throw rugs and bathmats to reduce water damage and to help prevent injuries from slipping on a wet floor.

Fixtures

Traditional bathroom fixtures include a sink, a toilet and a bathtub or shower. Faucets and handles come in brass, chrome, brushed nickel, aged copper and other finishes. Choose a finish, and use it throughout the bathroom, including the fixtures, towel racks, lighting and decorative elements. Consider the function of the room when choosing fixtures. A small powder room for guests might need only a pedestal sink and a toilet with an elegant mirror and a hand towel. A child's bathroom, on the other hand, might require a full tub and a vanity with drawers and cabinets for storing towels, toiletries and bath toys.

Linens

Bathroom linens, such as bath towels, hand towels, washcloths and bathmats soften the strong lines of a bathroom filled with hard, porcelain fixtures. A cheerful set of yellow towels brightens a child's bathroom. A tub-side basket filled with plush white rolled towels evokes a spa-like atmosphere. Monogrammed towels impress in a guest bathroom. Linens are easier to change than paint and flooring, so use this opportunity to introduce color, pattern and style to the restroom.
