Remodel and move a bathroom to maximize the home's space.
When the economy falters, homeowners tend to invest in their homes. Contractors stay busy with remodeling, as homeowners look to increase their home's value, install environmentally friendly fixtures and appliances and create a more pleasant environment, especially in the bathroom. If a homeowner wants to move the bathroom, it makes sense to do so during the remodeling to reduce the inconvenience of having an unusable or semi-usable bathroom. Plan the bathroom move and remodeling job carefully to allow for a smooth transition.
Instructions
1. Measure the planned area for the remodeled bathroom. Make sure that enough space exists for the desired fixtures and accessories. At a minimum, a bathroom should have space for a sink, a toilet and a bathtub. Small bathtubs can fit into a small space, giving room for a child's bath or standing space during a shower. Alternatively, if the new bathroom will occupy a large area and the budget allows, large bathtubs, jacuzzis, sauna stalls and many other extras can fit into the remodeled bathroom.
2. Purchase all materials and fixtures. Plan where each fixture will sit, and carefully measure the spacing. Purchase bathroom fixtures and accessories by shopping at an online bathroom supply site or at a home center.
3. Install the plumbing lines for outgoing and incoming water. Carefully measure the plumbing lines to make sure that they line up with the bathroom fixtures' planned settings.
4. Bring the bathtub in first to avoid difficulties.
Bring the bathtub into the new bathroom area to save any future difficulties of maneuvering the bathtub into the remodeled bathroom. Bringing a bathtub through a bathroom doorway can be difficult, so do this before building the bathroom walls.
5. Frame the bathroom's interior walls and ceiling. Purchase the framing wood through a lumberyard. Place insulation between the exterior bathroom wall and the wood frame, as well as between the roof and the ceiling's wood frame. Insulating properly saves money, creates a comfortable and warm bathroom and allows for sound construction.
6. Place electrical wiring in place along the wood frame. Wiring must exist for a light, a light switch and an electrical outlet. Lay wiring for any other planned electrical gadgets in the renovated bathroom, such as an exhaust fan, a tankless water heater, an illuminated mirror, floor heating, a thermostat or a towel heating drawer. Follow the state and local building codes to insure that the wiring meets all requirements.
7. Lay the interior plumbing pipes for the new renovated bathroom. Plan in advance which fixtures the remodeled bathroom will include. In addition to the basic necessary fixtures (sink, toilet, tub), consider such options as a urinal, bidet, jacuzzi or even a sauna stall. Sinks and bathtubs will need faucets, and the bathtub should include a showerhead.
8. Nail sheetrock onto the framing boards to close in the interior walls and ceiling. Cut holes in the sheetrock where the exterior piping will meet the bathroom fixtures' pipes. Tape down the seams of the sheetrock and sand them, creating smooth interior walls and ceiling.
9. Hang the bathroom door, and install the bathroom windows. Many homeowners prefer opaque or tinted glass for bathroom windows.
10. Check for leaks after installing fixtures and faucets.
Install the fixtures and faucets. Attach each fixture's interior plumbing pipes to the exterior pipes. Check for leaks by running the water to each fixture and faucet and flushing the toilet several times.
11. Install built-in cabinetry. Bathroom cabinetry usually includes, minimally, a medicine cabinet.
12. Lay the floor and wall tiles. Caulk the areas where the wall and floor tiles meet as well as along the base and sides of each fixture where the fixture meets the tiles.
13. Wallpaper or paint the ceiling and walls.
14. Attach bathroom accessories to the bathroom walls by screwing them in with a screw gun. General accessories for a bathroom include soap dishes, mirrors, towel racks, shower racks and a toilet paper roll dispenser.
