Decorate A Dining Hutch

Dining hutches are commonly used to store various items in kitchens, such as china, silverware or even non-perishable food. These practical pieces of furniture can help keep your kitchen organized and can show off your belongings. Having your dining hutch decorated to match the rest of your space will give your kitchen an elegant, put-together look. Decorating a wooden dining hutch isn't difficult and can be done in various ways depending on your taste in decorating.

Instructions

Painted Dining Hutch

1. Sand the surface of the dining hutch using the fine-grain sandpaper to remove any paint, residue or varnish.

2. Sand the dining hutch with the coarse-grain sandpaper to remove any imperfections in the wood such as dents, cracks or scratches. When you are finished sanding, you should have a smooth, even work surface.

3. Remove the handles from the dining hutch as well as the glass, if applicable. Use the screwdriver to remove the screws holding the handles in place by twisting the screwdriver in a counter-clockwise direction. Set the screws, handles and glass to the side.

4. Paint the dining hutch using the latex paint in the color of your choice. Apply a thin, even coat and allow the coat to dry before checking for transparency. If you can still see the original wood color showing through, apply another coat of paint. Continue applying thin coats of paint to the hutch, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next, until you have an opaque finish.

5. Mount the decorative handles onto the hutch through the holes created by the old handles. Use the screwdriver to screw the handles into place by twisting it clockwise. If the hutch has glass panels, remount the glass.

7. Sand the dining hutch with the coarse-grain sandpaper to remove any imperfections in the wood such as dents, cracks or scratches. When you are finished sanding you should have a smooth, even work surface.

8. Remove the handles from the dining hutch as well as the glass, if applicable. Use the screwdriver to remove the screws holding the handles in place by twisting the screwdriver in a counter-clockwise direction. Set the screws, handles and glass to the side.

9. Apply a generous coat of wood stain in the shade of your choice to the wood. Quickly wipe the stain off using a clean cotton rag. Continue this process until the entire hutch has been covered with stain and then wiped. Check for any smudges, streaks or bristles in the stain. If you find any imperfections in the stain, carefully wipe at them using a cotton rag until you have an even surface. Allow the stain to dry thoroughly before handling. The amount of time it will take for the stain to dry will vary from brand to brand.

10. Screw the decorative handles into place through the holes created by the old handles. Twist the screwdriver clockwise to tighten the screws. If the hutch has glass panels, put the glass back in place.

Decoupage Dining Hutch

11. Follow the process of removing the dining hutch's handles and glass, and sanding with two grades of sandpaper.

12. Use the scissors to cut out pieces of the printed scrapbook paper. You will need enough pieces of paper to cover the entire hutch.

13. Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to the back of each strip of paper and press the papers firmly against the hutch. Use your fingers to smooth out any wrinkles or creases in the paper. Continue applying strips of paper until the hutch is entirely covered.

14. Use the foam brush to apply a thin coat of Mod Podge over the top of the scrapbook paper pieces. Make sure there are no bubbles in the Mod Podge. Allow the Mod Podge to dry thoroughly before applying another coat. Apply a total of five coats of Mod Podge over the surface of the hutch to permanently seal the papers to the wood, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.

15. Screw the decorative handles into place through the holes created by the old handles. Remount the glass.
