Refinish A Round Dining Table

Refinishing your round dining room table can make it look new again.

Refinishing your dining-room table will give old, worn-down tables with new life and a pleasing appearance. Scratches, dents and fading all occur on dining-room tables. Whether the damage is from the sun or years of wear and tear, refinishing your round dining-room table can be an efficient way to give your dining room a new look without breaking the bank. Removing the old finish and adding new paint or wood stain can make your round dining-room table look new again.

Instructions

1. Apply a layer of thick paste finish remover to the table, using a natural-bristle paintbrush. Let the finish remover sit for a few minutes until it starts to bubble and lifts the finish from the surface.

2. Scrape off the old finish, using a wide putty knife. Scrape along with the grain of the wood to avoid scratching the table.

3. Apply liquid stripper to the surface of the table, using a natural-bristle paintbrush. Let the liquid stripper sit for a few minutes. Use a medium-fine steel wool pad to remove and dislodge any leftover paste from the finish remover.

4. Remove the stripper residue by dipping a medium-fine steel wool pad in lacquer thinner. Gently wash away the residue from the surface, working with the grain of the wood.

5. Sand the surface with a finishing sander and 220-grit sandpaper to smooth out any blemishes. Wipe away any sanding debris from the surface of the table with a soft, damp shop rag.

6. Apply a wood stain with a natural-bristle paint brush. Coat the table with even brush strokes and let sit for at least 24 hours.

7. Apply three coats of polyurethane clear coat to the surface of the table, using a natural-bristle paint brush. Let each coat sit and dry before applying the next one.

8. Apply a finishing wax to the surface, using a super-fine steel wool pad. This will get rid of and fill in any surface flaws. Let the finishing wax dry and buff the surface with a soft rag for a smooth finish.
