Formal Dining Table Centerpiece Ideas

Formal Centerpiece

Formal centerpieces are important focal points of a dining table. When you are setting a formal table with attention to every detail, a creative centerpiece is something to think about. It can make your dinner even more special. Flowers are an old stand-by, but there are other ideas to consider as well.

Centerpiece Foundations

A mirror with a gilt edge can be the foundation for a breathtaking centerpiece. Everything placed on the mirror will be reflected. A glass tray also makes a perfect foundation. Sprinkle confetti or flower petals over the mirror or tray for a lovely effect. You could also scatter pretty beads. In the fall, use colored leaves, and around the holidays, holly and ivy.

Candles

Candles of different colors and heights can be artfully arranged for a striking centerpiece. Choose candles that fit the season for a pleasing effect. Pastels are fitting for a formal spring table; bold colors suit the summer; warm reds, golds and browns would be perfect for autumn; and reds and greens are festive holiday colors. Choose unscented candles so that they do not compete with the aromas of the food.

Fishbowls

Several small fishbowls placed together can make an attractive centerpiece. Fill the fishbowls with colored beads that fit the theme of the dinner or the season. Sprinkling greenery or flower petals on the table around the fishbowls will complete the centerpiece and give just the right finishing touch.

Flowers

Fresh or silk flowers are always a safe choice for a centerpiece. Be sure to keep the height of the flowers low enough that guests sitting opposite each other will be able to converse. A long, low bowl or basket makes an ideal base for an arrangement. If you decide you want fresh flowers, consult a local florist so that you will have exactly the flowers you desire. Make sure they are not delivered too far in advance or they may be past their peak when you need them. If you make your own silk arrangement, use a variety of seasonal flowers and finish the arrangement with a fabric bow in a coordinating color.
