Make A Master Bedroom Feel Cozy & Warm

Hang curtains on your four-poster bed to create a warm and cozy sleeping area.

At the end of a long day, you want your bedroom to be a place where you can relax and unwind and forget about the stress of the day. It's tough to relax, though, if your bedroom decor consists of an old comforter thrown across a plain bed frame and a pile of dirty laundry. By mixing rich colors and textures, you can turn that boring, cold and uninspired bedroom into a warm and cozy sanctuary.

Instructions

1. Paint the walls; choose a dark color of paint with warm undertones. Shades of yellow, orange, red, plum and brown make even the largest room feel intimate and cozy.

2. Add furniture in dark wood tones. Choose a four-poster or sleigh style bed, or a bed with a plush upholstered headboard, to enhance the coziness of the sleeping space.

3. Cover the floors. If the room has hardwood floors, add a large rug with a plush texture to ground the space and add warmth. If the bedroom already has carpet, add another rug on top for a rich, layered feeling.

4. Decorate the bed. Multiple blankets and plenty of pillows make the bed seem warm and inviting. Cover the bed with a textured quilt or bedspread in chenille, wool or raw silk, and add a folded comforter or duvet across the end of the bed. Several throw pillows in a variety of shapes and coordinating fabrics complete the look.

5. Dress the windows. Floor length drapes are dramatic and make the room feel more intimate. Even shorter curtains can create a cozy feeling when they are made from substantial or luxurious fabrics, such as raw silk.

6. Change the lampshades on bedside lamps. Replacing plain white shades with cream, yellow or gold shades makes the light feel warmer and more cozy. If you have overhead lighting, install a dimmer switch so you can control the light and create a cozy atmosphere.

7. Accessorize with warm touches. Display a group of candles on a mirrored tray, or place silk or dried floral arrangements on the dresser. A chenille throw arranged over an armchair or a chest at the foot of the bed adds warmth and texture.

8. Hang wall décor to coordinate with your color scheme. A series of framed black and white photos of the family adds a personal touch to the room.
