Bathroom Makeover Update Ideas

Bathroom Makeover Update Ideas

A bathroom is the most expensive room to remodel in the home besides the kitchen. It also is a room that will bring a large return in resell value. If you are preparing to remodel a dated bathroom, consider style, shower and tub surround, countertop, flooring, and accessories such as lights and faucet sets. All of these can give you a beautiful, updated bathroom.

Style

The chosen style for a remodeled bathroom will greatly determine most of the other choices. Styles to consider are modern, traditional, country and contemporary. It is also possible to choose a style that is theme-based. For example, if you want an Oriental or a tropical look, choose materials, colors and decor that will give you that specific look.

Countertops and Sinks

Options for countertops include granite; manufactured quartz, which is an imitation of the higher-end countertops (granite, limestone or marble) and is likely to scratch; ceramic or stone tile; and solid surface, which is made to look like natural stone. The sink that you will put with the countertop can be recessed (set inside the counter) or a vessel (set on top of the countertop) and both come in a variety of colors, shapes and materials. You also have the variety of a pedestal sink, which is a free-standing sink without the vanity and countertop. The pedestal sink is an option to consider when space is limited.

Flooring

There are many options for flooring when making over a bathroom. These options include laminate flooring, peal-n-stick vinyl tile, VCT (vinyl composition tile), ceramic or porcelain tile, and natural stone tile. In order to increase the value of the entire home, using ceramic, porcelain or natural stone tile in the bathroom is the way to go. And more specifically, natural stone tiles may pay for themselves in the end and are typically worth the extra expense. Completing the installation yourself can save you a huge amount of money. The Home Depot and other big box home improvement stores offer free tiling classes on the weekend and are well worth the time investment.

Tub, Shower and Surround

This is where money can either be well-spent or simply wasted. A bathroom makeover is not complete without removing the old porcelain-coated steel tub and replacing it with a deep, jetted relaxation tub that will allow you to make your new bathroom a destination and a getaway. Few surround materials are as attractive, durable and easy to care for as ceramic, porcelain or natural stone tiles. Do not forget to seal the tile and the grout to keep them beautiful for years to come. Find tub and shower hardware that matches vanity fixtures as a set. Doing so will tie the two areas together and streamline the look of the whole bathroom.

Lighting

Lighting can make or break a bathroom makeover. Too little light, or light sources in all the wrong places, can really put a damper on an otherwise great bathroom design. Adding mirrors to wall surfaces behind wall-mounted sconce light fixtures will brighten any bathroom by extending the reach of the light. Reflected light will go a long way. Use recessed can lights for a warm, ambient light feel. Do not be afraid to supplement electric lighting with natural light sources like high windows and skylights. Natural lighting is also the best quality of lighting available.
