Install A Bathroom Exhaust Fan Duct Kit To A Soffit

A bathroom exhaust fan helps control moisture.

A bathroom fan helps control moisture and odor in the bathroom by sucking air from the room and venting it outside the house through the roof, the sidewall or the soffit. All three are effective methods, but venting through the soffit has several advantages over the other two. First, it's safer than a roof installation because it doesn't require you to climb on and walk around on the roof. And second, it's more attractive than a wall vent because it doesn't interrupt the lines of your house.

Instructions

1. Go up to your attic and proceed to the area over the bathroom. Slide a 90-degree elbow onto the exhaust of the fan housing, and secure it with foil duct tape. Slide the duct onto the other end of the elbow, and secure it with foil duct tape.

2. Walk the other end of the duct over to the soffit. Place the hole saw on the drill, and cut a hole through the soffit. Leave the attic.

3. Place the ladder beneath the soffit. Replace the hole saw with a drill bit. Slide the connector duct through the hole until the wall cap, or grille, is against the soffit. Drive screws into the four corner holes to secure the wall cap. Apply a thin bead of silicon caulk around the seam between the soffit and the wall cap. Climb down.

4. Return to the attic. Attach a 90-degree elbow to the connector duct with foil duct tape. Attach the duct to the other end of the elbow and secure it with foil duct tape.
