What Height Should I Hang A Light Over A Dining Table

Light fixtures add ambiance to dining room spaces.

Whether a space is contemporary or traditional, ensuring that a light fixture is hung at the optimum height above a dining room table helps maximize lighting and improves the overall look of the space.

Height

A light fixture should be hung so that its bottom edge falls between 28 and 32 inches above the top surface of the table.

Table Size

The height of the light fixture is also determined by the proportions (length and width) of the dining room table that it will be hung above. Light fixtures should be hung higher above larger tables, and lower above smaller tables.

Other Considerations

During installation, the height of the light fixture should be considered and viewed at different heights before a final height is settled upon in order to see what it actually looks like in the space. The light fixture should also be viewed from several different perspectives. A light diffuser can be used to hide the view of light bulbs if they are visible from underneath in a light fixture that is hung high.
