Decorate & Makeover Your Small Bathroom

A floating shelf unit adds more storage to your small bathroom.

Decorating and making over a small bathroom space presents the homeowner with a few challenges. The limited wall and floor space of the room affects all aspects of the bathroom makeover. However, simple solutions exist that will give your bathroom a facelift as well as create the illusion of more space. These allow you to use common decorative elements to fix some of the flaws that a small bathroom sometimes possesses. These elements taken together will bring a new vibrancy to your space.

Instructions

1. Choose a light color such as egg shell, yellow or pale blue as your bathroom's main color. Lighter colors give the illusion of a bigger space.

2. Select a decorating theme and then choose decorative elements that support this theme. For example, you'll create an ocean theme by gluing assorted seashells onto a wooden mirror frame, putting up a shower curtain with a shell design, laying down tiles with embossed shells, adding decorative shell-shaped soap in the soap dish and by placing a shell decorated candle in the corner of the tub.

3. Hang up wallpaper on one wall or in one area of the bathroom to provide a focal point. For example, put up a pink paisley wallpaper in the bathtub area if you have a full tub. Add wallpaper to only the enclosed area of the bathtub.

4. Extend your storage space and add a decorative element by hanging a floating shelf above the facet if your tub is a tub only set up. Fold up towels and washcloths or add extra soaps and shampoos to the area. Look for a shelf that matches your bathroom's decor.

5. Create the illusion of a larger space by hanging up mirrors and extra sconce lights. Mirrors reflect the light in the room as well as present the illusion of more space. Some possible simple ways to add mirrors include adding a three-piece triptych style mirror to the bathroom sink area or by adding smaller decorative mirrors to the walls.

6. Add a skirt around a pedestal sink. This allows you to store items such as a small vanity bench, which you can set towels on or use to sit on to get dressed after the bath.

7. Hang up decorative wooden pegs for towels and robes. Choose single pegs in a variety of colors to add spots of color to the walls.

8. Extend your wall storage space by adding a shelf unit to the toilet areas. These shelves usually come equipped with tension bars that have shelves attached to them. Because of their design, they don't take up much floor space, leaving the floor free for a garbage can and toilet brush. To tie this piece to the rest of the decor, select a unit that comes with a matching can, smaller shelf unit or stool.
